What would gaming be if every company didn't produce a cart game with their respective mascot(s) duking it out with their enemies? Probably about 50 games lighter. Squaresoft did their part in contributing to the cart craze with the under-the-radar 1999 release of Chocobo Racing.
It is quite difficult to get a cart racer wrong like Super Bombad Racing managed. Luckily, Chocobo Racing avoids falling to the likes of SBR, but does not even come close to achieving that wonderful play of the leaders, Crash Team Racing and the Mario Kart series. However, if you can live without the BMW's of gaming and won't mind tooling along in gaming's version of a Honda, you'll be just fine.
The premise is as simple as you would imagine. However, instead of vehicles (carts), you will choose from a selection of Chocobos. Each Chocobo maintains different inherent strengths and weaknesses a la Mario Kart. The jockey you select (mostly comprised of Final Fantasy VII characters) will have no bearing on the overall skill of your ride besides giving you some eye candy.
Varied tracks with several hazards, a fantastic audio score, unlockables, and light-hearted fun overshadow some of the drawbacks. These include somewhat erratic controls, a degree of difficulty that makes opening up a refridgerator look like a daunting task, and a generally silly idea.
