Knowing the makers had spent as many years working on this game as they did I expected great things but sadly I was disappointed.
The game has solid graphics, cutting edge. It will be rivaled probably by only one other game in the next 5 months. These graphics were done very well making everything look as realistic as possible. It helps create the erie atmosphere and really makes you feel as if you are there so prevalant in previous Dooms. While the atmosphere is done in a good way it also has its draw backs. You will rarely if ever come across an area that is any where near fully lit. It becomes very repetitious as you play on.
To light the rooms up you have a dinky little flash light with a battery that lasts for eternity it seems. You can not have the flash light held in one hand and a hand gun or other weapon in the other. There is also no gun in game with a light on it. I find this odd considering the fact that in real life right now there are some hand guns and even assault rifles with them. You do not even have access to night vision or infrared even though you are a marine.
The person you control interacts with the enviornment around them. Chairs, cans and many other things will be knocked to the side as you run or walk at them.
You have the option of using some monitors and when you do so no separate screen appears but instead your weapon lowers and an arrow appears for you to take action with. This helps keep your attention on the action itself rather then other areas of the game. The same happens when you go to put the code in for various crates.
The game makes you conserve your ammunition rather well, this is especially so early on. Accuracy is rewarded in this game, if you shoot one in the head or at the neck it will take far fewer shots to kill then if they got shot in the chest.
Weapons you may use have their own advantages in most cases. Shotgun is best against certain beings while the pistol is better against others. I am disappointed by the inability to aim down site or go prone. To crouch you must press a key and hold it. There is no key which makes you stay that way.
If you do not wish to use a gun to attack you may use a chainsaw, the flash light or your firsts. Be warned that if you do use your fists it is as if you are a light weight fighter in a heavy weight world.
I am disappointed by all of the closed in areas as no real tactical strategy is needed. The "baddies" are pretty dumb and only in numbers do they really have a chance of killing you.
They do scare the stuff out of you early on as they pop out of areas you wouldn't expect and the noises coming from dark corners helps but after a while even this becomes routine.
There also is no story to really speak of. I have not yet played online but hear there are significant backdrops to that including there was a 4 player maximum which the mod community already made a "patch" for.
In all my rating is:
Sound: 9
Graphics: 10
Gameplay: 7
Overall: 8.5
I recommend this game if you wish to be spooked out as it does this well with all of your lights off, sound up to the max and being alone. However if you want anything more then a scare I do not recommend it.
