Having never played a metroid game before, i had no idea of what to expect from this game.  So, i powered up my Gamecube, and instantly, i knew this game was special, the background of the main menu was spectacular, the music, while a little creapy, seemed just right, and this is before i even started the game!
There is literally loads to do and see in metroid.  Although you probably dont notice it, while you explore the vast worlds you notice things that you cant get too, and then later in the game, you find and upgrade and think "what the hell am i going to do with this", and then it clicks, you remember that thing that you could'nt get to before, and realise that you can now get to it.  Its things like this that make this game as good as it is, it makes you, without realising it, remember things about the worlds that come in handy later in the game.
Metroid has firmly knocked both StarFox off the best looking gamecube game, and makes both Halo and Unreal2 look bland and basic in comparison.  The effects from your weapon, such as the warped effect you see when you launch a chaged power beam, is a sight to behold.
The visor effects.  The water dripping off it when you come out of water, rain drops on it when it rains.  Blood from enemies when you kill them at close range, when it steams up when your near something hot.  Amazing.  And thats before you get to the alternative vision modes.
The thermal visor, although at first seemingly useless for anything but seeing in the dark, is quite impressive, you can see power conduits running through the floors and walls, it overloads when it gets too hot.  And finally the X-Ray vision.  allowing you to see certain enemies propely, you can also see the bones in samus's hands as well.
The boss battles.  Wow.  Some of the bosses are literally huge, and i mean huge.  You wonder how your going to beat them.  Same with some of your normal foes, some of them are quite big as well, but you have something they dont, a way to find their weaknesses.  The scan visor.  Locking on to your foe and scanning them will give you detailed information about them, and a hint on how to beat them.  The scan visor can also be used to scan things like control consoles, and other things.  Everything scanned is added to your log book, so you can read up on them at a more convienent time.  Scanning things in an importent part of completing the game.  If you want to get a 100% completion rate, then everything needs scanning.  Yes you heard me, everything.
The sound aint half bad either, and ive only played it with stereo speakers!!!.
The music in each area is well suited and sets the right mood, the sounds from your guns are well done as well, the sounds from the enemies are varied.  I'd imagine that on a ProLogic2 5.1 system, it'd sound amazing.
As ive said, there is literally loads and loads to do and see in metroid, and for many people, the need to get a 100% completion will be enough to get them playing it several times through.
Overall, this is the best game out on a console at the moment.  Bar none.
