Alundra is basically a Zelda clone. But it's a very good one at that. It blends in action, adventure and RPG elements well. Your basic job is to stop an evil force who invades the dreams of a town. You can explore dungeons or explore people's dreams. You go around solving some nicely though out puzzles and gaining new equipment and abilities. There are some very nice dungeon designs. Overall, the game feels very much like any 2D Legend of Zelda game but it does have some minor flaws. The difficulty of puzzles seem inconsistent. Some of the dungeon designs are just not as good as others. The game is a good challenge and will last about 20 hours. There isn't much to comeback to and there isn't much in the way of sidequests or mini-games.
The graphics are fully 2D. You won't see a single polygon in this game. But they're still nice. Some nice artwork and special effects are present. The game runs smoothly with minor very minor slowdown. The thing is that the sprites aren't very sharp. And the over all look of everything is very bland, very monotone.
The sound quality is good, nothing really wrong with it. But it could have been a bit better. The soundtrack is full of many great tracks but also a few bad ones.
The story is great. As Alundra, you must help the people of a town when you become stranded there. You have the power to help people by walking into their nightmares and destroy them in hopes to have done it quickly enough. The story is surprisingly well done with many unexpected and tragic events.
Final words: Minor flaws aside, this is a great and enjoyable Zelda style game for the Playstation.
