The gameplay is somewhat disappointing. You cannot customize your characters that much. Your character's stats are affected by how many spells you have acquired. You draw magic from your enemies to attain it and then you can use it until you run out. It may seen interesting at first but gets really boring when you have to find a certain kind of enemy just for a rare spell. The card mini-game is kind of fun at first but gets boring as it has no balance. The game is pretty long and there are a high number of random battles but they end quickly. The boss battles are good but the final boss battle is too long.
As with each new FF game, the graphics and sound just keep on getting better. The level of detail on the characters and the environments are unsurpassed. The character designs have become realistic and there is an interesting use of FMVs for the special effects with real time backgrounds.
The sound is nicely presented in Dolby Surround but lacks quality. The music starts out pretty good but gets really repetitive and boring as you play. There are some really nice tracks but most of it is lacking.
The story is really boring. It does have some interesting plot twists but for the most part it will leave you bored. The characters are a weak bunch. They have emotion but lack heart. Their personalities are nothing that you will care about. There is variety but they are all forgettable in one way or another.
Final words: While a good game, it lacks in key areas of music, story, and gameplay.
