Combine a fast and fun battle system, minus the random battles, add in unique dungeons, plus a lengthy quest equals Grandia. Grandia's gameplay is very fun. As already mentioned, battles are actually fast and enjoyable, and there are no random battles. Battles take some strategy as well as quick thinking. Dungeons and levels are very well designed, and are fun to explore. The magic system is somewhat basic, but is still interesting and there are many items and weapons to get. The game feels very linear though it's nothing to complain about. The game can be completed in about 40 hours but can offer as much as 60 hours of gameplay due to the large areas to explore. There isn't much in terms of replay but that can be ignored as the game is never dull.
The fully 3D worlds look nice and the characters/monster designs were nicely done. The special effects are very nice and clean. The design of everything is very nice, and the colors are vibrant. Everything in the game feels alive. The game has a very light-hearted look and it really fits the game well. Being able to rotate the camera is a very big plus as it makes exploration easier. But the game suffers from slowdown and the textures aren't very sharp.
The game sounds pretty good, not very crisp or clean. The sound is good for the most part, but it just seems as that the game should sound better. Sound effects are always on target and never off beat. There is a good amount of voice acting but it's not the best, and some voices are rather annoying. There are many excellent musical tracks. The musical score of this RPG is, like the graphics, light-heated and fits the game well. There are some tracks that seem a bit lacking but they are few and far between.
The thing that you will remember most after you finish Grandia is the story. The whole game starts out with an innocent, care-free feel to it but as you quest, you feel a drive to go on and to discover. A young boy, Justin, is hungry for adventure and finds. The cast of the game is very memorable. The story combines adventure, friendship, love and humor very nicely.
Final words: A fun, light-hearted, and unforgettable RPG.
