The gameplay is turn based but there are some unique features that actually make battles interesting. You can see the enemies on screen and so there are no random battles. The enemies don't really use strategy, but using it against definitely helps. The game is very easy to pick up and play. The dungeon designs are good, but this game is very linear and doesn't require much exploration. The game lasts about 25-30 hours and doesn't offer much in terms of replay. There are some things to collect, so it might be worth a replay for some people. After beating the game, there is a short epilogue that shows what happens after the whole saving the world deal which is nice to see.
The game looks bad. Not to a point where you'll want to go blind, but something that most people won't be able to appreciate because this game is old. It looks old. But the graphics are still very artistic. Designs and models are all good. The game is very smooth and the sprites are crisp. The anime cut-scenes are very nice, and definitely seem to do the job better then any computer animated FMV could (though some of the scenes combine CG and anime).
The sound is nothing special either. Though the stereo is not bad, it's definitely not good. The voice acting on the other hand is rather nice. All the characters are portrayed nice, but the voices at times are amateurish. The music is really good. Some of the tracks are outstanding. Not many tracks are bad, but there are a few that are a bit stale.
The story is the game's strongest point. It has heart, and is very innocent at first. But it develops into a very deep epic with its fair share of twists. There are characters that join and leave you. The story's main theme is love, it takes a back seat most of the time to adventure. The characters are very interesting. The story also has some funny moments.
Final words: Under an outdated looking shell, rests one excellent RPG.
