The graphics are very well done. The fully 3D world with sprite characters work surprisingly well. The 3D mechs look great and are very nicely detailed. The special effects are nice but nothing that really wows. Everything is the game flows smoothly and without flaws. The game does have some polygon breakups and there is a good amount of slowdown. But neither spoil how the game looks. The anime FMVs are very nice but there is only a total of 20 minutes worth in the whole game.
The game sounds great. The sound effects come in harmonically with the visuals. The soundtrack to this game is one of the best ever. The music is varied, never monotonous and fills the game with emotions. The music does a great job of elevating how enjoyable the game is. There are a few tracks that sound a bit repetitive but the sheer number of great tracks.
The gameplay is the best aspect of this game. You travel around the world, visit towns and dungeons, and take part in battles. The random battles are unique. You can get into battles in mechs (Gears) or without them. You have different strengths of attacks and accuracy. As you progress, you will pick up combo attacks. There is a very basic magic system and lacks depth. The game is very challenging and battles do take some though. The bosses are really tough. The game is will provide a good 40 hour adventure but expect to spend more time to finish the final stages of the game. There isn't much to go back to after you finish but the game is long enough by itself.
The story is great for the most part. You play as an outcast of your home town and have to go on a quest to discover yourself and end up saving the world. Kind of a bare bones story but it is really deep. But that is where the story is hurt. It gets so deep sometimes that it becomes overly confusing. The story is never boring though and will keep you entertained. It is a dramatic mystery.
Final words: A excellent RPG experience that definitely deserves a look.
