The game plays like the classic 2D Castlevania games. This is 2D side scrolling at its best. Add in some RPG elements and this becomes one intriguing game. The main hero, Hugh, has to go around and beat up baddies in Dracula's castle. As he does, he gains experience points and level up. There are a variety of weapons and items. The game is pretty challenging and there are some cleave puzzles. There is a good amount of backtracking required but it all goes through quickly. The game is a good length for a portable action platformer. There are some optional things to do for added play time.
Konami did a great job using the GBA hardware. The game looks great. All the characters are very nicely detailed and the levels look great! The animation is very smooth and there can be many special effects on screen at once. But the game looks too dark screen and requires a very good light source to play. The game sounds good with the built-in mono speaker. If you use some good stereo headphones, you will notice that the game sounds a lot better. The music is really great and fits the game very well.
The story is... well, just another chapter to the Castlevania line. It is similar to most other Castlevania games as your main goal is to beat Dracula. It is good but the basic story of the series is the same each time and this game is no exception.
Final words: An excellent adventure game for the GBA.
