The gameplay is just about perfect. It's basically the same as the control set-up for the previous N64 Zelda games but with many refinements. Link has new moves and weapons. The control set-up is very good, and the Z targeting (but it's done with the L button this time) and responses excellently. The searching and exploring is fun but near the end, it does get a bit tedious. There are only a handful of dungeons but they are all very brilliantly designed. Sailing is fun at first can be it slowly becomes boring as you near the end of the game. There are tons of islands to explore and the game does offer a good amount of play time.
Many people hate the 'cartoony' look of this game. But in truth, the graphics are very fluid and looks great. The detail on everything is so lifelike, the characters and environments move with realism. The graphics are very easy on the eyes, and they really do work well with this game. The landscapes are huge but some of it is hidden using a low focus filter. Some of the dungeons, sites and the certain under water place that most of you will recognize (don't want to spoil it) are just plain wonderful and give you an instance of awe. While the game does move smoothly, it only runs at 30 frames per second. There is minor slowdown in a few areas but that's with an incredible amount of effects on screen at the same time.
The game sounds excellent. You have to listen and you will hear many ambient sounds. The use of Dolby Pro Logic II is great. The sound effects are perfect. The music is, for the most part, from previous Zelda games with some variances. The music is good though and fits the environments well. Its transition from one mode to another (like from exploration to battle) is great. There is some new music which is welcome.
The story takes place 1000 years after the events in Zelda: Ocarina of Time but you don't have to know anything about it to enjoy the story. The story begins of you (Link) turning into an adult and in a strange turn of events, you have to go rescue your sister. You meet a group of pirates and the story slowly unfolds into a deep and wonderful adventure. The ending the some of key moments are presented excellently.
Final words: The best game of 2003. A truly excellent game.
