Skies of Arcadia Legend for the GC is pretty much a straight port of the DC version. If you have fully completed the DC version, then this might not be worth a second look even with the new story elements, bounties, discoveries and others. This is a very traditional RPG. There are dungeons/levels which you have to explore and find treasures and bosses which you must defeat. Your characters have their basic moves such as attack, magic as well as special moves. Each member consists of their own magic points (MP) but the team shares spirit points, which are used for special moves and magic. Magic points really take a backseat to spirit points. Weapons can change their elements to increase effectiveness against enemies of opposing elements. Spells are learned by whatever the color of your weapon at the end of the battle. Character development is done through items and experience. Battles are random. Battles can last a bit but are fun and there aren't many of them. The best thing about this game is the one on one ship battles. That's right, ship battles. They're turn based except you have to plan out your attacks on a 4 by 4 gird. It's hard to explain but easy to play and is very enjoyable. The game can easily take up 50 hours but will take upwards of 80 hours to fully complete the many side-quests. The game isn't hard but it's not easy.
The graphics are outdated. They don't look that bad but they do show their age. The characters and levels are designed nicely. The clear up lines (watch the textures on the ground as you walk, you'll see what I mean) are very evident. Some of textures are sharper but it's hardly noticeable. But there are some visually stunning scenes which are beautifully done and still hold their own to this day. The art is superb. The special effects are still amazing. The cut-scenes are good and the animation is smooth 95% of the time.
The sound is good, but has some problems. Sometimes the audio goes missing or the volume decreases then increases. The characters have their random things that they say and it's usually annoying. The musical score is excellent. The orchestrated title theme is absolutely amazing and the in game tracks are very fitting. The only thing is that there should have been a few more tracks.
Vyse, an avid young air pirate, is hungry for adventure. And that's exactly what he finds when he and his companion, Aika, rescue a mysterious girl (Fina) from an enemy ship. Fina is on a secret quest and requests for their help. And so starts the adventure of friendship, betrayal, mystery, tragedy, trust, discovery and most of all… adventure!
Final words: One of the best RPGs ever. A must play game if you have never played it and highly recommended for the veterans of the Dreamcast version.
