This has to be one of the most original concepts for a video game in a long time. The game is very much like a 2D platformer, but there are VFX that make the game a completely different experience. Joe (the hero) turns into Viewtiful Joe, and uses his powers from the VFX watch which let's Joe 'slow-down' time to avoid attacks and deliver powerful blows, 'mach speed' to attack multiple enemies very quickly, and zoom in do different and special attacks. Sounds confusing, but it's very simple and fun! Each section and level is scored based on defense (remaining health), style (combos) and v-points (power hits). V-points can be used to by new moves, upgrades, replenish health/lives and attack items. The game has many different enemies and puzzles which have to be fought using different VFX techniques. The game is very challenging. Even on the easiest level, players will be forced to retry many times. Certain points do not allow saving and certain battles can go on for long periods of time. The game will average about 8 hours, or 5 hours if the player never dies. There are higher difficulty levels which can be unlocked as well as new characters (with different abilities). But the higher difficulty may become frustrating for most. But the game always remains a fun and rewarding experience.
The game looks superb. For a 3D cel-shaded game, it feels exactly like a 2D game. The graphics and colors are smooth and vivid. Characters all look great and sport excellent design inspired by comic book characters. The animation, no matter how many crazy effects are on screen, is complete free of frame loss. The game has many special effects, some clichéd but they all look good in this game. The cut-scenes look great and look like they were pulled from comic books.
The sound is excellent, definitely nothing to complain about. While it may lack any good use of surround sound, the game does a wonderful job in stereo. The music is good but not great. The voice acting is top notch and the voice actors do a great job bringing the characters to life. Watching the cut-scenes clearly shows the game has been dubbed as the character's lips do not move accordingly to the dialogue, but it's not much of a bother. The sound effects are excellent and never miss.
There isn't much of a story, but it is definitely worth mentioning for two reasons. One, it is pretty funny and interesting. And two, playing the game and watching the cut-scenes feels like an animated comic book or a cartoon.
Final words: One of the most unique, challenging, and fun games for a long time.
