The gameplay is very unique. The battles are AIB based and enemies can be seen o on field so you can try to avoid engaging in battles. Parties consist of 3 members. Each character can attack, use techniques, or cast spells. What set the battles apart from other games are the techniques. If two or more characters have full ATBs, they can combine techniques to perform double or triple techniques. Using these techniques requires timing and planning. The magic system is pretty basic, opposing elements are most effective against each other. The game has some cleaver puzzles as well as some really good level designs. Many enemies and bosses require special tactics to defeat. As characters progress in the game, they gain new abilities and stats. Towns offer mini-games, item and weapons shops and characters full of information. The game pretty challenging and will take about 35 hours to complete. After completion, the 'New Game +' mode appears in which a new game can be started with all previous equipment, abilities, and levels. The game has 3 real endings and another possible 12 endings. This game offers much to come back to.
The game (for it's time) looked wonderful. The character designs are really good and the environments were superb. The sprites were pretty sharp and some of the special effects were great. Every scene in the game is amazing to watch each time and all of them are memorable in their own way. Boss design is also another amazing thing.
The sound is very clear for a cartridge. The sound effects all sound great and everything is on sync. The musical score is one of the best ever. Every track in the game is memorable. The music fits the level, town, event or scene perfectly and help to elevate the overall feeling of the game.
This game has quite possible the best story in any RPG. The story starts out with our hero Crono in the year 1000 A.D. who visits the Millennium Fair. He meets a girl there (Marle) who joins Crono. When Marle decides to take part in a science demonstration (by Crono's friend Luca) and disappears. It's up to Crono to find her, and so beings the adventure which spans through time. The story is truly one of the best ever and how the story turns out depends on the player.
