The gameplay is almost on target. The stealth in this game is taken to the next level and the physics are some of the best. There are a variety of weapons and gadgets to use. You do have to do some backtracking but not too much. But there are some major flaws. The biggest one being that the game is just too short and easy. Even on the hardest setting, the game can be completed in less then 5 hours and there isn't much to do afterwards. The boss battles give you that overshadowing feeling but they are not very interesting. The AI is really good but nothing to spectacular. While they do use some great tactics to take you down, you can always take them down faster and without much effort. What really hurts is the fact that this game tries to be on the same level as movies and because of that, it becomes boring at times.
The graphics in this game are, hands down, the best PS2 graphics to date. Everything just looks great! From the characters to the levels, everything screams with detail. The environments are extremely well done and you can interact with so many things. You won't believe what you are seeing sometimes. Of course, the FMVs are nothing to be ashamed about.
The audio is on the same level as the visuals. The game sounds amazing. From the sound of a shot being fired, to the exploding mine, to a body being hit –it all sounds extremely realistic. The voice acting is Hollywood quality. All of the voice actors do such a wonderful job of portraying the characters.
The story is the biggest downer. While the first MGS had a complex and interesting story, this one doesn't. Instead it's complex and confusing. By the last few bits of the game, you will be wondering what is really happening. And no, this isn't a mystery game. They story becomes over-complex for it to be enjoyable. The game characters are not as interesting as the last games though there are many returning faces. The best why to appreciate the story is to ignore it.
Final words: Definitely a new standard in graphics and sound, but falls short in every area after that.
