The gameplay is the best aspect of this game.  Fighting is unique and enjoyable.  You have a targeting button which lets you pick a part of the enemy to attack, and whatever part you attack affects the enemy.  There are magic spells which can heal your character, attack an enemy or some other things.  Each character has their strengths and weaknesses that have to be taken into consideration when fighting.  There is a wide assortment of weapons that are historically accurate and have their own ups and downs.  Then there is the sanity effect, quite possibly the most innovative feature in an adventure game.  Your sanity meter determines how sane you are depending on certain actions.  If your sanity is low, you will see different sanity effects.  You don't play it, it plays you.  The game fails to be scary but it has it's moments.  The game will take about 12-15 hours to finish the first time and about 10 hours the second and third times through.  With 3 endings, you will have to play this game a total of 3 times to see the real ending.  Some of the areas are a bit annoying but they are few and far between.

The game looks very nice. The character designs look like they belong in their respective centuries.  The monsters also look nice and very unique in design. There could have been some more polygons put to use though. The environments are excellent though. The environments look like they were pulled form history books, the atmosphere is very creepy.  The attention to detail is amazing. Each character moves and reacts very realistically. There is not slowdown or drop in framerate.  The FMVs look pretty good but nothing spectacular.

The game sounds excellent.  The developers put DPLII to good use. The sound arrives in perfect harmony with the visuals. The sound effects are so realistic that sometimes you will be confused into thinking they were coming from your house. The voice acting is great, each character has different accents though all of them speak English. The music is very fitting and only enhances the atmosphere.

The story is very well written. They story spans centuries and different characters in history through an evil book. There are 3 gods, each with their own plot for dominating the world. The story is one of the best is any game and it is nice to see that the developers paid so much attention to the story, something that is overlooked in many games.

Final words: If you want an extremely enjoyable adventure game, then Eternal Darkness is for you.
