This game hardly related to the main Final Fantasy series. I finished the game, from start to finish, all by myself. So the gameplay score is based on single player mode. The battles take place in real time. This is a hack and slash RPG, but sure doesn't fell like an RPG at times. You have some basic commands such as physical attack, magical attack or use items. All are done by selecting the forementioned commands and using the 'A' button to execute (or charge and then execute) it. You collect magic orbs (to use magic) in each level (you have to recollect them each time you play a level) and can combine 2 or more magic orbs to get different spells. A moogle carries a chalice to protect you from the miasma (HP damaging mist). He can carry it for a good bit before he becomes tired and needs you to carry it for a short while. He can help in battle when the chalice in on the ground but he isn't really useful. Most of game isn't hard but some points of the game are extremely annoying and repetitive. Later bosses tend to drag on (especially the final area). Limited item slots are annoying as you can't tell which items you really need. You have to go to different areas to collect myrrh; every 3 areas you complete finishes a year in the game and you can finish the game after year 5 (though it's very hard). You can redo each level after a year and each time, the enemies get tougher. Character development is done by stat increasing artifacts. You can choose one after completing an area. You travel in a linear world map and along the way; you randomly meet up with other caravans (which are stored as memories). The game can be completed in 12 hours but will take most people about 20 hours.
This is one beautiful looking game. The characters have a deformed designed but are highly detailed. The bosses and monsters look great and are unique in style. The environments are huge and the detail is exceptional. Special effects are some of the best in any game and the vivid colors and lighting are wonderful. The animation very smooth but there is some minor slowdown. The graphics are an absolute visual joy.
The game sounds great. The sound effects are direct hits each time and the narrator's voice acting is great. The use of surround sound is pretty good. The music is excellent. Every track brings the perfect emotion of the environment, music helps amplify the atmosphere.
There is no story. The 'story' seems to be thrown out of nowhere. RPGs should have a story but in this game, it can be (and should) be ignored.
Final words: A visual treat but only somewhat enjoy single player mode. Definitely a multiplayer game.
