This game is for fighting fans, plain and simple. I was never really a big fan of the fighting genre so in the end, the longevity of this game did not hold my interest but the amount of moves and fighting style unique to each character is in it self, commendable on the developer's part.
Being new to the Virtua Fighter series, the move list for each character was overwhelming. I spent some hours in the training section learning the moves and when I finally get into battle, I totally forgot ALL the moves that I practiced with the exception of simple combos. Just goes to show you the broad the range of moves at the player's disposal. I, being lazy, did not have the patience to learn all the moves but for fighting fans, once you master the moves, you will be able to triumphantly vanquish your opponents with tons of different moves. However, the moves, at times, can be extremely frustrating to execute as it requires swift reflexes and such especially when you want to pull off a more complex combo. The default button configuration doesn't make it any easier either as some combos requires the player to press a few buttons at the same time which makes it extremely frustrating in battle so it's in your best interest to experiment with different configurations to suit your comfort level. In short, if you're a beginner to the series or to the fighting genre in general, this game will take time and patience to master. Oh and I must add that simple button mashing will not lead you to victory (like in many fighting games) as this game requires you to actually master some of the moves which should be a plus in everyone's book.
In the game, you can choose to play the arcade, training or quest mode to become the Virtua Fighter Champion. The quest mode is basically the reason why this fighting game has a great replay value. With a "Win-Lose" track record and being able to customize your characters, you become determined to emerge victorious with each battle. With each victorious battle, you gain experience and at times, money as well. With experience, your character will move up in rank and with money, you are able to buy clothes and accessories to get your character all dolled up for battle which in my opinion, is a minor annoyance considering the fact that you're getting ready to battle and not preparing for a fashion show, but it can be also considered a perk if you enjoy customizing your characters to look "cool" in battle.
The graphics are extremely smooth and detailed. Considering the fact that the developers spent time on both the graphics and gameplay, it makes the fighting experience more enjoyable for beginning and mastered gamers.
In the end, I welcomed the array of moves, customization, and the goal to become the champ but it just didn't completely compensate my lack of enjoyment for the genre as it gets tiring after a ridiculous amount of battles you're faced with in the Quest mode. Not to say, that I didn't enjoy the game for a time but the enjoyment didn't last long as I'm just not the kind of person to face battle after battle after battle. It becomes how you say, boring after a while. But if you're a fighting fan then this game is by all means, belongs in your collection. (Overall Score = 7.0)
