When you look back on the SNES, you think about all the great games that were featured and this game is definitely no exception. Offering fun and addicting elements, the game presents one of the best replay values ever to grace a console.
No need to be fanatic of the racing genre to enjoy this game as you'll find yourself immersed in the pure innovative fun of racing with your favorite classic Nintendo characters such as Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Koopa Troopa, Bowser, Yoshi, etc. Your goal as the racer is to compete in Cup Tournaments of increasing difficulty to prevail as the victor and receive either the Gold, Silver, or Bronze Cup depending on your overall performance in the five different races/tracks in each Cup Tournament. One thing to keep in mind is the fact that each racer has their own advantages and disadvantages so you should experiment with each character that best suits your racing desires.
The complexity of the tracks depends on two factors. One is that the racing tracks are rather simplistic in the beginning and it's pretty straightforward if you choose the easier Cup Tournament such as the Mushroom Cup. The tracks become somewhat more intricate once you choose to participate in a more difficult Cup Tournament such as the Star Cup. Tracks are equipped with speed boosters and Question Blocks that provides the racers with items that can be helpful depending on what your position is in the race. For example, if you're currently far behind in the race, you might receive a red shell that pursues the opponent in front of you and causes the racer to spin out of control once you activate it. If you're doing well in the race, you might receive a pretty useless banana peel that you can drop on the racetrack, and hope and pray that the aggressive racer behind you slips on it.
The game maintains and increases its replay value once you compete against a friend. Once in the tournament, you don't necessarily have to compete against each other per se. You can always indulge in knocking the other opponents with a devastating red or green shell right before they cross the finish line just for the sheer fun of it. There's also a very enjoyable Battle mode where you and your friend face off by shooting projectiles continuously each other while roaming endlessly around a track full of blocks that stand in your way.
Graphically, the game is simple but detailed with colorful colors to compensate for the overall simplicity and the sounds are plentiful, as you'll hear unusual noises in certain situations ranging from certain impacts, bumps, and the result of using specific items.
With the superb two player mode and innovative elements, it's almost impossible to grow tired of this game as the replay value dramatically increases the longevity of this game which keeps you coming back for more.
