God of War is very, very close to the Platonic True Form of the platform fighting game. From the beginning to *right before* the end, it is almost flawlessly executed.
The the one flaw is *incredibly* glaring. (spoilers follow!)
The end is marred by a battle that is the antithisis of the rest of the game. Where GoW consistantly delivers very challenging but balanced fights, Ares' second form is a throwback to the chesse-happy fighting games from years past. While throughout most of the game, things ramp up at a reasonable pace, and you're requried to apply concepts you leared from the small groups to larger and more complicated sets of enemies, this formula is totally changed for the end.
Your primary weapon is taken away, and replaced with a weapon similar to the Blade of Artimis but with different combos, and Ares is given a large number of unblockable attacks. Coupled with the "see-saw" lifebar, it's like playing a frustrating, crappy version of GoW.
Which is a damn shame, because up to that point, GoW is just incredibly fantastic. A Must Play.
