To tell you the truth, I am still playing this one right now and only have gotten as far as somewhere in the middle of Atlantica at the moment. A funny idea I had about this concept is that it is kinda like a square/disney version of super smash bros. melee. As SSBM is a bit of lip service to those who love everything nintendo, this game brings back all your lost and remembered square and disney characters in full effect. All are voiced amazingly and surprisingly most of the time by the original voice actors of those roles with the exception of genie from Aladin who seems to be voiced by the same person who voices Homer J. Simpson, but it is still a wonderfully done job.
Let me tell you how I am going to rate this one. My wife hates videogames with a passion and gets impatient for me to turn off whatever system I am playing about five minutes after I have turned it on. This is ironic cause I will have to wait for her to finish watching whatever she is watching on Animal planet or whatever sitcom she is interested in at the moment. If I breathe a word while she is in her sitcom or action drama, I am in the doghouse. Now, of course her eyes rolled when she saw I had rented a game, again. She didnt let me get on my ps2 immediately when we got home when I am telling you that I so wanted to. As soon as midnight rolled around and our daughter was asleep, she gave me an ok, and I convinced her to sit around with me and watch for a bit. This was when I was so sure that aliens had abducted my wife and left a somewhat more balanced person sitting there next to me. She sat there and was actually the first person to utter the word 'wow'.
From the intro to traverse town, she was there and so darn into the story and the characters that I think I have lost count of times that I offered her to play instead. She actually said she preffered to watch while I was playing. I think my mind was about gone at that moment.
Throughout every inch of progress I have made in Kingdom hearts, my wife has been there watching it with me and making sure that I paused this example of excellence when she went to the bathroom or had to get something to eat. I am not too sure what else I can mention as a proving point that this game is just great. I am only bummed out about a few things and let me tell you, I am really trying hard to pick some really small nitts.
First, I dont like that you cannot skip the little movies. There is nothing wrong with the movies, mind you, it is just that after you have died a few times fighting the same boss, you get a little tired of seeing the little opening movie to that fight scene. Secondly, I wish I could map my spells to more than three buttons. There are loads of spells and sometimes in the heat of battle, it is kinda impossible to trigger off the right spell without getting whacked. Thirdly, I dont know if I would have loved this game as much if it was turn base, but that was what i was expecting at first, this being a sqaresoft electronic arts game. Lastly, I really wonder if all the lip synching works in the japanese versions, cause they dont work a bit in this. If not, then why dont they hire a few eidos people or someone from a studio that really knows how to lip synch and face synch to voices and emotions... it would go so much further to enhance and make a reality of any game they put out. My last little nit to pick is that I am so pissed that I rented this game instead of saving the money to buy it instead. It is that good. I would guarantee that if you get your hands on this title, you do so for good and not for a week rental or something. This is one of those games that comes along once in a long time and it will be one of those games that you will talk about to define a genre.
