I loved Devil May Cry. I kinda liked the whole Resident Evil series. I love Dynasty warriors 3 and up. I loved Crimson Sea. I dont really see how a game that combines elements from all these games can go wrong. Honestly, from looking at the 'proffessional' reviews of Chaos Legion, you would assume that I am nuts for attributing this title with a 9 out of 10, but (even though I can be a little nuts) I believe there is method to my weirdness. I want to demonstrate how I feel that Chaos Legion drew the great parts ouf these great games.
From Devil May Cry, you may be quite blind to not notice that I feel that the absolute coolness of the main character was drawn from there. The fighting style, use of jumps and solid bashing of the enemies. I think that he hecktic nature and the slight draw from the RE series was contributed from the DMC facet.
From RE, as mentioned, the way that DMC siphoned from RE, is quite the same way Chaos Legion does as well. Of course, you arent put in a horror situation, but still the way the cinematics play into the story is similar. The style of the characters and all that.. it is all there. Also, you might think that the use of items would be similar, but I dont think so.. the items are very plainly displayed on the playing field as iconic items.
From the Dynasty warriors facet, the cup of 'kick alot of ass and then kick some more' is very much evidently siphoned. You kill alot.. then more.. then some more, then you repeat as necessary.
From Crimson Sea, I notice the style of the enemies and sheer number is copied with much grace.
I loved the upgrade system used to handle the level and attack capabilities of the legions. It really turned out quite well, in my opinion, and really represents the amount of action that I would like to see in an action game of the sort. This is a great ass kicking game that has some of the coolest character design and funky interface that I have ever seen in a game. Even though the PS2 might be showing it's age sometimes, I am always in awe of what can be created on the system with it's comparitively limited hardware capabilities. In short, this game looks beautiful.
Dont believe me? Rent it and see.. I think it will be more than worth your rental fee and only worth your purchase fee if you are getting tired of beating up dressed up chinese men in a chinese history lesson.
