I was torn between giving this game a 7 or an 8. I decided on a 7 because so many people are giving it 10's which is flat out ridiculous. On to the review.
First thing that strikes you about the game are the graphics of course. The engine feels very polished and refined, everything feels a bit cramped but it certainly looks nice with good effects.
While walking through the game and looking at the backdrops I couldnt help but think things looked familiar somehow, then it hit me. Anyones who's played the Q3 based Star Trek Elite Forces will agree with me that many of the effects and mechanical style of graphics are almost lifted wholesale out of that game.
Next thing that strikes you are the facial animations, they look good, real good. I cant remember the last time I was mesmerized by something as simple as a characters face. Unfortunately though despite the great facial graphics the games story is weak and though the graphics beg you to become immersed in the game, the lazy story, uninspired dialogue, and boring PDA story system conspire against this effect.
On to the combat, I can sum it up in 5 words: Not as good as Far-Cry. In fact the enemies arent as good as Quake 2 enemies. Come on Carmack we deserve better than this AI.
In truth the AI's potential is stunted by the claustophobicly small environments, and the fact that theres rarely more than a couple of enemies on screen at one time. But in a Halflife/Farcry world the enemies just arent much fun at all.
The weapons arent going to save the experience either, the pistol is weak and the SMG is just awful.
In short a review has to be based on ones enjoyment of the game, I appreciate the feel of the engine, the graphics particularily the backdrop graphics(eanimation isnt up to FarCry standards).
The game is playable but I in no way feel the massive drive to play the game as I did Far Cry. If I were doing a review on a 100% scale the game would probably get an 80% and FarCry a 94%.
The fact that SO many people are utterly overrating this game and losing all sense of logic and being caught up in stupid mindless hype is whats forcing me to give the game a 7 simply to create some balance.
