What is viewtiful joe? Its an old school platformer. Period. Its polished, it plays well, it has added features, but at its core its a simple old school platformer.
Now if you're a fan of retrogaming and old school games you will like this game a lot I have no doubt of that. The gameplay is as precise as a swiss watch, the characters look cool especially in the slow-mo mode, the bosses are cool in the old school tradition.
The trouble in rating this game is that how do you compare this game to movie-like epics like Resident Evil 4? Its a fun little platformer but it cant compare to games like RE4, so I have to take this into consideration when rating it.
So what we have is a flawless platformer, a 'small' game, yet very good at what it does. Prepare for your eyes to become saucerlike as you realize how difficult the game will be with the number of lives they give you though.
Platforming isnt the only old school part of the game, this game harkens back to the days when you were expected to get through a game on one quarter or not at all.
I may be lazy but I cant muster the intensity or desire to want to put out the energy to get through this game. The game COULD have been designed where it was difficult yet not ridiculously hard. Like starting you out at the beginning of the stage instead of the beginning of the game.
This game isnt for me, but if you like a real challenge and enjoy platformers this game is for you.
