Spikeout is a "brawler" long in the making and long overdue for home consoles. Originally an arcade game that was hugely popular in Japan, Spikeout was rumoured for years to show up on the Dreamcast. Now, several years after the demise of that great game system, Spikeout has arrived on Xbox, complete with online multiplayer options.
To sum up, Spikeout is basically a 3-d version of Streets of Rage, with a slightly more "punk" attitude, and not as much fun stuff. As a long time fan of "brawlers" of this type, I would say this is at best a middling effort. There are multiple characters to play, nice graphics and a decent soundtrack. Unfortunately, there aren't enough cool moves, cool items to use upon the baddies, not enough interesting bad guys, not much in the way of humor (one of the reasons I loved Die Hard Arcade), and some really annoying camera problems when you get trapped in a corner.
This is a rare game, supposedly only 3500 copies were made for the US. But I would suggest AGAINST paying some jackhole the $80 or more I've seen it go for on Ebay or Half.com to acquire this short, mediocre fighter. I'll get some enjoyement out of it, it's not a poor or bad game as a whole, but don't get your hopes up for Streets of Rage 4, 'cause this sure ain't it. It's probably worth the $30 that it's supposed to retail for if you're a longtime Sega fan and a fan of "brawlers" as I am.
