Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is an action-adventure "Beat-em-up" game based on the popular fighting games in the Mortal Kombat universe. In it, you play as either Liu Kang or Kung Lao and fight your way through stages, most of which are the backdrops from the fighting games.
The negatives I find with the game are few. There's a lot of story and CG video inbetween stages, and I found the story to be poor and boring and difficult to follow. The CG characters look terrible, and it failed to get me interested in the game.
But there are many positives, and all in the important areas. The game controls phenomenally and you've got a ton of moves and specials at your disposal. The pace of the game is just right, and there are several modes of camera to choose from, which is very helpful. The enemies are varied, cool looking and interesting, and there are really great stages and stage fatalities. The art direction is fantastic, and there are some great fatalities that you can basically use at will on stunned foes. There are lots of really great puzzle areas, and there are some fun "Test Your Might" stages too. Some great "boss" battles are included, and as with any MK game there are lots of secrets and extras.
The game takes about 6-10 hours to "beat", which then opens up extra characters to play as in addition to opening a fully playable Mortal Kombat II.
I would have to say I'm both impressed and highly entertained with the MK foray into the beat-em-up genre. There are some presentation issues, but the gameplay more than makes up for it. Very high marks, and a big thumbs up for this title.
