Crackdown is a game that sounded really stupid to me in concept, sounded just like the kind of game I'd never have any interest in, and which was made for teenagers that like games where they hear swearing and giggle like little girls (GTA, I'm talking to you) in mirthless glee. But a trustworthy friend said it was actually quite good, and he also didn't get much out of the GTA craze, so I tried it.
Crackdown is a very simple game, on most fronts. You control a super-powered police officer, you have guns & grenades, you run around and drive around a crime filled city shooting gang members and hitting them with cars, throw them off buildings, throw dead bodies into other gangsters, etcetera. You get piped in some "missions" which basically amount to "find and kill this guy", and then an icon appears on your radar, and you go hunt down and kill the dude. Doesn't sound all that interesting, I realize. But man, is this game addictive and smooth.
I have trouble putting my finger on what exactly about Crackdown attracts me that GTA never had going for it, and I think it's a sense of urgency and a sense of the world really continuing to live on after you shut down your Xbox 360. Things seem to happen differently every time you play. A carful of gangsters pulls up into an intersection, two maybe three guys get out and start firing shots at you. You fire back, and sometimes a car or two of police officers will show up to help you. Then, sometimes, cars full of gangsters show up and the whole scene goes crazy. Crazy fun, as in, explosions everywhere and much trash talking to boot.
So my summary is this - if this game sounds stupid to you, if you hated GTA....still give the demo of this a download and play it, see what it does for you. You just might find a surprise gem that you never expected to like.
