This review will compare MK:DD to the rest of the series, so if you haven't played them, don't bother reading this.
It seems the Mario Kart series is slowly falling down in quality, MK64 was not as good as the SNES one, and the GBA one wasn't as good as the N64 one, yet they were all great games, has this finally stopped happening on the Gamecube?
Mario Kart: Double Dash!! is still using the same basics as the old ones: fun racing with items to shoot each other. However there are now 2 characters in each kart, and you can choose which two you want. You can also choose which kart you'll use and that really has an effect on how the game plays, in other words: a bit more depth in the system.
However they did take a bit away too: the game has been aimed more at the weapons than the racing, since you can now carry 2 weapons per character, and there are still items that count as three items, you can sometimes have 6 items at the same time, this new system made it possible to never, ever run out of items, even if you use them the second you pick it up. Doesn't sound annoying? Well, the levels have been made shorter, most of them are even half the size of some of the shortest SNES ones, and then think about the number of shells and bananas flying/shooting/lying around: simply too much at the same time.
Also, if you get hit once, there's a high chance of getting hit again, and again, and again.
The maps are the worst of all the Mario Kart games, not that they're really bad, but compared to the rest they are nothing. But my biggest problem with them is that they are based around Mario Sunshine, my least favorite Mario game, if you liked that game, you won't have that problem.
The battle mode always used to be my favorite mode in the Mario Kart series, however, this one, is really, really bad. They just failed to make a single good and fun map to play on, which simply takes the fun out of it.
Forget what I said at the GBA review, this one is the new low, but like the GBA one, this game can still be fun, but not as much as the old ones. I'd say a rent.
