Just when i didn't care about not having a PS2 the most one of my friends decided to get Disgaea... For a couple of weeks i more or less live at his house for one reason: best PS2 game ever...
Most tactical games are all the same, with the only big difference is that one of them has the speed stat to decide who walks when, and in other the two teams just take turns. However i have never seen one where you could throw your opponent. Or one where you can cancel a characters movement after he went back got healed by a different character. Disgaea has these little things, and believe it or not it has a huge affect on the gameplay. Probably the biggest difference with most games is it's FFTA like combo system. Put 2 characters next to each other and they make a combo when they attack, then cancel their movement and the characters used in the combo can attack again (or start another combo). Put that together with a New Game + option combined with stronger enemies and you have one of the most addicting games created.
But that still doesn't give a good idea of how different Disgaea is, so let's talk about the story. Disgaea is about a young(?) demon boy called Laharl, his vassal Etna wakes him up and tells him that his father, the overlord has died... 2 years ago (apparently Laharl outsleeps even me).
So now Laharl wants to fight to get his place as Overlord of the Netherworld. Sounds allot better then the ussual 'save the world' story huh?
Disgaea managaes to do things that have been done allot of times, but still keep it original, for that alone they deserve a 9... But they managed to keep it interesting enough to beat it 4 times without skipping the story, so i'm giving it the 10 it deserves.
