Ok, this game is a must have for anyone who meets ALL of the fallowing critiria:
Must LOVE rpgs
must LOVE sci-fi anime
must not mind long cutscenes
must not mind being confused by a story for a short while knowing that it will all make some sence eventually.
must have a lot of free time
must be willing to deal with all kinds of rpg statistics.
must have an open mind.
If you are missing even ONE of these, than this game will bore you. But if you approach it knowing exactly what you're getting into this can be one of the richest rpg experiences out there. There are a few flaws, so I'll get them out of the way. The gameplay to cutscene ratio is very small in the beginning. There is a huge story here and the first few hours of the game are spent setting it up. Also the visual style is a bit dull. By no means ugly but the bleak future the game portrays isn't always exciting to look at. Also you must know that this is only the first part of a big saga, so the ending doesn't resolve much. The game ends at a logical point though, so you don't need to worry too much.
Now onto the good. Once the game hits its groove you'll be hooked into its story. Gameplay eventually takes center stage and the cutscenes become a reward for finishing a dungeon or beating a hard boss. The story here outclasses every game I can think of. The gameplay is also first class. The battle system is innovative on so many levels, but it can be overwhelming. Leveling up sacrifices simplisity and accessability for pure custimization. You get four kinds of experience points, and you have complete control over how three of them are used. You have to love statistics to like this game. Its a die-hard rpg fans dream come true, but everyone be warned, be ware of what you're getting into. It may be over your head. I give it an 8.5 out of 10.
