The most important thing to do is understanding the point behing this game. A thing that I saw missed in many reviews I read...
Paradoxally, what many persons consider cons are the game own features and characteristic. It may sound odd that "repetitiveness" is a partcular feature of a game. As well as the claustrophobic ambientations. Anyway, this is PN03's world. The story takes place in a sort of a robot factory, hence the levels are pretty similar to each other.
But this isn't much strange, considering this game is structured like an old style shooter (and shooters are quite often repetitive). You'll pass through various rooms filled with enemies to kill as soon as you can.
Vanessa is your character, she is a mercenary equipped with technological suits that can blast shots from the palm of the hand and unleash some spectacular (and extremely powerful) special attacks. With this equipment, which you can improve during your quest using points you earn in the game as money, you'll face an army of robot, that will try to take you down with their laser shots.
The main peculiarity of the gameplay is that you can shoot only if you stand still; shooting while running, jumping or dodging isn't allowed. This gives the game a more difficult approach, although the targetting is automatic. The controls are very good, except for a couple things. First off, inverting the function of Y and X would have been best (Y makes Vanessa dodge, X switches active target among the possible ones on screen... considering you shoot with A and you'll often need to switch target, using Y for this purpose would have been a better choice); then, there is a bad turning speed, which results in a non perfect control of Vanessa... A bit more attention and this part could be easily improved. The rest of the commands are OK, although learning to use Z to turn backside (if you press down on the Control Stick, Vanessa WON'T turn around and run in the opposite direction) takes a bit of practice... But when you learn to use at its best the controls, you'll can build up some nice strategies to destroy the robots and get much satisfaction ;)
About the graphic... It's almost monochromatic... from white to gray, typical for a robot factory ambientation... Together with the techno music that's throughout the whole game is a good combination, but it certainly isn't an original choice... Back to the graphics, textures could be more detailed... The main point of the game is the "rythm" of the game... Adrenalinic, it always keeps high the action during the game, and watching Vanessa moving like a dancer is really cool and she captures you in her dance ;)
Finally, the game must be purchased only if you are really aware of what kind of product PN03 is. It is NOT suited for occasional gamers! It's a game that has to be understood first... Like Ikaruga, to make a comparison.
