While a good game, I do not think this is a great game.
This game can best be described as 1995 meets DirectX9.
At it's heart, Doom3 is an old-school corridor shooter. There's nothing wrong with old-school gameplay and revisting the roots of the FPS genre. And if anyone is qualified to do that it's Carmack and ID. But I must admit, I was expecting them to come up with some new gameplay features and weapons. What we got however feels exactly like Doom with better graphics. I have a very "been there done that" feeling while I'm playing it.
The game itself also makes some very silly decisions. Apparently in the 22nd Century people constantly leave voicemails to themselves reminding them of their locker security combinations. And a marine is not capable of holding a pistol and a flashlight at the same time.
Speaking of flashlights, the game is rather dark. So dark that often you can't see anything (really, anything) in the room with you if your flashlight is off. While some may find this fun, I don't. I find it annoying.
I'm left wondering how this game would be recieved if it were put out by an unknown developer. I think it would have been just another average release.
In the end I give it an 8. Most of that is due to the beautifull graphics. The lighting effects are increible if not overdone in places. The sounds and atmosphere are downright creepy at time. But I just can't go any higher because I don't consider the game very fun. And in the end that's what I want from a game. For it to be fun.
