Gran Turismo 4...the game I bought a PS2 for. Was it worth the wait?
Resoundingly YES!!! While not perfect, it is without a doubt the best racing game I have ever played.
Graphics: Even I, an Xbox owner, had to say "Wow". The sense of speed is much better than GT3, the car models are much improved, and the backgrounds are breathtaking.
Sound: I'm used to being able to rip my own soundtrack into an Xbox, but even so, the soundtrack is great. "Panama" by Van Halen is one of my favorite songs ever, and it's in there!
Gameplay: Gran Turismo 3 times 10. The sheer scope of the cars and races is incredible. It took me an hour to go through all the cars to pick out the one to start with (of course I had extra money from a GT3 save, which gave me more options.) The tuning choices are all you would expect from a GT game. My only real complaint is the qualify choice prior to a race. In GT3 I would use the qualify lap to test my settings and, of course, improve my placement on the grid. Can't seem to find that choice here.
The new B-spec mode seems okay for a novelty, but so far I've spent my time on the "meat and potatoes" of Gran Turismo mode (A-Spec).
Overall, this is a game that will be monopolizing my game time for months to come. It blows away my other current favorite, NFSU2. While not perfect, Polyphony has knocked another one right out of the park!
