BE WARNED: The game starts off kind of slowly, so if you find yourself bored in the beginning, just grin and bear it, and your patience will be rewarded with one of the best RPGs ever.
This is a classic, pure and simple. It ushered in a golden age of RPGs, and its still great after half a decade.
Basically, you guide a party of adventurers all over a huge and wonderfully atmospheric fantasy world, while uncovering an evil scheme. Doing a lot of side quests is required to get you to a level high enough to tackle the main plot, but the side quests are all extremely fun, so you won't be bored. Combat is tactical, and very fun, and the pause-and-issue-orders function gives you complete control of the battle while keeping the pace nice and fast. Unfortunately, there is a low level-cap (10), so the battles never get that big, and your characters advance slowly. However, the main plot is magnificent, and once you get into it, you'll happily put up with the low level cap and the few frustrations of the dated engine just to see how it all plays out.
Baldur's Gate was a brilliant, deep, non-linear, story-driven RPG five years ago, and it's a brilliant, deep, non-linear, story-driven RPG now. The only difference is that now the game (and its expansion) go for about $20, all because it has dated graphics and a few interface problems. If dated graphics, a few interface problems, and prerequisite patience don't put you off, you'll love it.
FINAL SCORE: 95%
