More than a movie tie-in and more than an FPS.

First off all, everything you've heard about the graphics is true.  The game is really really ridiculously good-looking, especially the shadows and the character models.  Come to think of it, this game might have the best graphics of any game I've ever played (NOTE: I have not played Far Cry, Doom 3, or Half-Life 2).  The graphics also serve to create the perfect mood: Riddick is drenched in the dark and gritty sci-fi prison atmosphere that's a lot like Alien 3 (NOTE: I'm not saying that Alien 3 is a good movie, just that it has good visuals).

So what genre is Riddick? Its kind of a mix.  There are run and gun FPS sections that are pleasantly like Halo, there are stealth sections that bear similarities to Splinter Cell and Thief, and there are "talk to people and do quests" sections that are reminiscent of KotOR and Deus Ex.  The FPS sections of the game are a lot of fun, and running back and forth doing quests for people really immerses you in prison life.  However, the stealth sections just annoyed me, as the stealth interface is awkward and unintuitive.  Luckily, they pass, and you'll be smiling again once you have a shotgun in hand.

Like so many action games, Riddick is just way too short.  Other than that and the stealth issue, Riddick's only problem is that its not the best: Halo is still a better FPS, Splinter Cell is an infinitely better stealth game, and KotOR has better questing.

These problems are barely an issue.  Chronicles of Riddick made me forget how much I rolled my eyes during Pitch Black (STAY IN THE LIGHT, MORONS!).  It temporarily made me forget how much I want Halo 2.  It may be a bit too short for a $50 purchase, but if you rent it or buy it used, you'll be treated to one hell of an action game.

FINAL SCORE: 93%
