After being somewhat disappointed with the MOH series, I was a little reluctant to try this game, however after reading the great reviews and having several friends constantly praising the game, I decided to give it a chance and I did not regret it.
Call of Duty is your standard World War II shooter.  Similar to the MOH series in it's main game play but so much better overall.  The story is pretty simple, you are a soldier in the war and fight with the rest of your team against the German army.  However, although you start off as an American you also get to play as a Brit and a Russian.  The game is exceptionally good at pointing out the differences in the fighting techniques of each country.  Especially the Russians, who do not take lightly to cowards.  The main thing that makes COD so great is the action.  It's non-stop right from the start.  Every second is fun and doesn't let you go.
First off, let's get the basics out of the way.  The graphics are good, although not amazing.  There are almost no collision errors, a quick save, great sound and standard controls.  Where COD surpasses others is in the details.  The training is simply and short, yet enough to get you through all the necessary points.  There is nothing I hate more than a 45 minute training to learn how to shoot some guns.  The load times are short.  During them there is always a message to read, which is usually two or three paragraphs and the load is done before you can read it all (at least on my AMD 1.2 it is).  You can skip through any cut seen, whether it is your first time watching it or your tenth.  Your teammates are smart and actually help.  Although they sometimes get in the way of your fire and run into battle to quickly, still better than in most games.  The enemies hide behind trucks, boxes and anything else to stay alive.  The poke their heads out to take a shot and pull back for cover.  They also lie on the ground when being shot at, making it harder to take them out.
The one thing I found that made the game a little easy was that when sniping, you are way better then the enemy.  They seem to miss a lot more than they should.  The aiming is perfect, you could shoot a guys toe off with a sniper gun.  However, with other guns, the precision is much worse, as the guns were at the time.  Each gun is specific in look, accuracy and other details.  You also need to use all the controls to your advantage.  You need to lean, crouch and crawl or you will get shot.  When a bomb/tank blast hits you, your vision gets blurry and you can't hear, a nice extra effect.  Also, in the middle of the action, when all the guns are blasting, you often have trouble hearing your commanding officer, another nice extra, which makes the action seem more realistic (there are subtitles however, so you can still know what to do).
The game is not perfect though.  There are a few problems, but they do not take away from the game.  For one, your gun does not sway when you move.  Something that I thought was pretty standard in games these days.  Also, you cannot interact with anything.  No opening doors, no shooting vases, etc.  There is one part where you have to follow your commanding officer and for some reason he keeps stopping when you are right next to him and you have to move around till you get in the right spot for him to continue.  Finally, shooting your teammates often stops play.  I always liked it when you would be considered a traitor and all the others would fire back (like in Halo).
All the negative points are very minor.  The action is there and it is definitely worth the purchase.  Get the demo and give it a chance.  If you like WWII shooters, this is the one to get.  Also, for the console players, a version is on it's way.
