When I first heard about this game, I was not clear on how it could be as fun as everyone says it is. You roll around with a ball and pick up stuff that is lying around to make the ball bigger. That is actually all that you do, but even as simple as it sounds, it manages to be one of the better games I have played in a long time.
Katamari Damacy is basically a puzzle type game, although it is hard to classify it into any genre. You have to roll around the levels and reach size goals in order to replace the stars in the sky. If you reach your goal, you pile of junk is thrown into the sky by the king of your planet and it turns into a star. There are several different areas that you can roll around in and you can literally pick up anything. At first, it is simple, pick up thumb tacks and erasers, but as you get bigger it gets better. First off, you have to make sure you don't get stuck and that your ball remains somewhat round, so that you can maneuver properly. Secondly, you have to get to a certain size within the allotted time. You can pick up everything once you are big enough, including children, houses, clouds and even whole islands.
The game remains fun because the mode of play changes. At first it is just a race againts time. Then some levels give you an item that you must try and get the most of or an item that you can only pick up one of, but you have to try and get the biggest one. For example, if you need a bear and only one bear, as you roll around, you need to avoid picking a small bear, so that you can get a large one.
There are also many unlockables and collections to complete. You can find new characters (your cousins) to use during multi-player mode, unlock some stages, view some shooting stars and try to collect one of every item. There is a complete list of items to collect within the game, leaving spaces for those you have not collected and if you want them all, it will take a while to collect them all.
The game is a lot of fun, has simple gameplay and can be enjoyed by anyone. The only problem is that the camera is sometime annoying, making it so that you cannot see your Katamari. Other than that, the game is very cheap US$20 and should at least be tried by everyone. I know it sounds stupid, but it is a lot of fun.
