Man, this is the shining jewel of the original Playstation in my opinion. Tons of strategy, lots of character customization, and a decent story to top it off.
If you're like me, you're somewhat jaded by RPGs these days. They just don't suck you in the way they used to. I find that I spend more time wandering around towns looking for some shiny object hidden in some room or finding who to talk to so that I can move on with the story.
This game is different. Chunks of story are handed to you as you progress through the game, but the majority of the time is spent battling. Gone are the 1-minute routine battles to build up your characters. Each battle in this game takes a fair bit of thought and planning, especially since the randomly encountered enemies level up as you do. When you finish a battle without losing a character, you feel a sense of accomplishment. Plus, if you did it right, you'll then procede to the rewarding task of selecting new abilities and skills with the points you've earned.
This one is still in my Playstation being played along with my much flashier Xbox games. A unique and timeless classic that, in my opinion, beats out the tedious Final Fantasy 8 and 9 on the PS1 hands-down.
