Thank God! The first good RPG I've played in ages!
I'm not sure if it's because I'm kind of old-school, but I feel like the last really good RPG I played was FF7 (I almost don't wanna count KOTOR...which didn't seem like a "pure" RPG to me). But finally, I found an RPG that I actually can't wait to play. Even leveling up doesn't seem like a chore in this game, and somehow, the battles never get monotonous.
The art style in this game is impeccable and breathtaking. The music is well-composed and majestic. The gameplay is fast-paced, balanced and actually fun. There are so many small touches that I love that add to the experience, even things that seem like inconviences at first. For example, the fact that you can't just save anywhere on the map, but rather, have to goto the church is a great way to make the player take things seriously. You won't just go off exploring random places too recklessly. You will want to level up before a boss fight, to make sure you can win (as opposed to there being a save point right before him, so you don't mind going in blind).
The only minor complaint I have is the voice acting. It is a little over-the-top (albiet, excellent and professional) and for lack of a better word, "dorky". At first, you will want to listen through everything they say with dramatic effect. Eventually, I found myself quickly scanning the text, and pushing the button to speed ahead. Still, it's a well-done aspect of the game, and I guess it's personal preference.
If you are a fan of any other Dragon Quest (or Dragon "Warrior") games, you will absolutely love this. It is the perfect iteration. If you're more of a new-school RPG player who wants to be interrupted with cinematics every other minute, you might not appreciate DQ8 as much.
