Still one of the all-time best multiplayer games created. The whole Mario theme gave it a universal appeal, and it appears very simple and accessible. This will lead a lot of people picking it up for the first time to think, "Hey I can play this game!" No one will be intimidated by it, for sure.
But that's not to say that the game doesn't require skills. An expert player will be able to dodge your every attack. A person with skills will seemingly ALWAYS have a red shell up his sleeve. And yes, believe it or not, there is some semblance of a racing line that will help him or her get across the finish line faster.
It's a colorful and fun game with a collection of non-obvious weapons. The star makes the most sense, as it is a common item in all Mario games. But green shells, red shells, banana peels, feathers, and even a mysterious ghost item that steals another players item (AND makes you invisible) all contribute to the game's sense of wacky variety. Even the different strengths and weaknesses of the different characters you can choose adds to the game's many dimensions. It's a game that is deep but simple, and just plain fun for everybody with two hands.
