Sid Meier's Pirates! is a remake of Sid Meier's Civilization. Now we know Pirates of the Caribbean tried to copy the formula used in Civilization. However, their plans did not suceed. Pirates! is something like Caribbean, but one thing different is that it is so much more better. On to the review.
Gameplay:
You start out as a really young pirate. Of course how you get your first ship? You will automatically loot it of course. Then you can go on the seas, adventuring around and doing numerous quests that will earn you lots of gold. Well thats the main target of every pirate right? Gold, gold and gold. When you want to sink someone's ship, you can either blast the heck out of them with your canons or ram hard into them and fight the captain instead. Speaking of fighting, the battle system is somewhat simple but unique.
Timing is important here, you will use your num-pad to fight. In other words, the fighting is based on saber fights. If your opponent is trying to slash you, you can give him a thrust just before he swings his saber at you. Of course theres more to just fighting, you can even go for war once you have enough mans. If you win, you get tons of gold and you take over that city. If you don't have enough man, but you do want to take over that city, its fine. You can sneak into town, you have to go stealthy or else you will get caught and throw in jail. Of course the stealth system is not Metal Gear Solid stuff, but again its just a simple formula. The downfall of the game is, it gets really repetitive. Alot of the cutscenes are repeated the same time, sure its cool to look at it for first few times. But after that, it gets old and boring.
Graphics:
The graphics are very good. Especially the characters, they have top notch designs. The ocean and backgrounds looks extremely great as well. No framerate probelms whatsoever though.
Sound:
One of the bad parts in the game. The voice-acting is really limited. I mean, the developers could atleast give spanish voice-overs for the country you are working for. Music is pretty alrite, but it gets boring fast.
bUy iT or ReNT iT?
Seriously, you can finish this game in 5 minutes. Divide the plunder in any major city and select the option "retire from pirating". Thats it, you finished the game. But seriously even if you don't do that, you can finish the game the correct way in just one day. I wouldn't say buy it though, renting Pirates! will be good enough.
