Another hack n' slash action game. This time though, its from the creators of Castlevania: Lament of Innocence. So expect the gameplay to be similar to LoI though as you are in for one hell of a gorish game.
Story:
Nanomachines has broken out into the earth and it has started spreading on humans. Thus morphing them into nano creatures. You will play as Jake Warren, a super-human soldier which body has been modified into a cyborg. The story is pretty simple as you will be sent to an island to destroy the super computer before even more nanomachines pours out. Then theres where the game gets on, with not much of a plot twist or anything else. Dull story I must say...
Gameplay:
Think of a basic hack n' slash with a dozen of combos to unleash out. Just the same as Lament of Innocence, Jake can do 2 different type of attacks: Horrizontal and Vertical. Then theres also the infamous whip that Jake can use to pull his foes closer and attack them.
All of the combos in Nanobreaker are pre-learnt. That means, all you need to do to have access to them are activating them with combo chips. The combos are simple and easy to learn, though the game isn't all that difficult if you just keep unleashing combos. There isn't alot of combos in Nanobreaker as well so figthing can get repetitive after a while of fighting. But still the combos are never useless as they proof really usefull in either crowd control on one-on-one combat.
Then theres also an RPG-style like lvl up system. The more you kill, the more gallons you earn. Gallons is equavalent to exp in Nanobreaker though, so when you reach a certain point Jake's health and booster gauge increases.
Now the most problemetic thing in Nanobreaker is the lack of healing items. Yea you will get your life fully restored after every mission. But still the missions are pretty damn long and healing items are rarely dropped from creatures. Even they are dropped, the healing items don't heal much. A real bad idea though, as the developers should really make healing items more common. I mean going on a one man army against thousands of creatures with rare healing items is a really bad idea after all.
Graphics:
The graphics are pretty good actually. All of the cutscenes are done in CG quality, and they are done well. Though nothing spectacular or eye-popping candy. The characters are well designed, though backgrounds are a little bland and dull. Theres also a small bit of slowdown if there are alot of enemies on the screen.
Sound:
What can I say, average voice-acting with mediocre music. Those words sums the sound department up.
buy it or REnT iT??
2 words... rent it. You can probably finish this game in a week if you take your time. Or infact, if you have go for insane gaming sessions, this game can be done in 2 days. The only good thing which keep me hooked up to Nanobreaker its the blood. There are just so much blood to be splattered and they can be changed into different colors as well. Though I don't think they are blood, kinda more like oil.
