Honestly, I really underlooked Mercenaries when I first saw it.  But not until I gave it a try, which actually blew me away.  Head on to the review shall we.

Story:
There isn't much of a story in Mercenaries.  You will pick from one out of the 3 mercenaries at the begining of the game.  Of course each of them have different abilities and play style.  You are hired by the Allied forces to bring down a deck of 52 cards.  Uhm...  not finding cards, but instead they are most wanted bad guys which of course are represented in cards.  Of course, this is one of the weakest point in the game.  The story isn't really that interesting.

Gameplay:
There are 3 different mercenaries you can pick at the begining of the game.  As I said earlier, each of them have different play styles.  The black guy can take bullet hits the most, so making him a walking mini-tank.  The chinese girl is a stealthy mercenary which of course you can sneak up to your enemy and take them down without him noticing it.  Last but not least, the white american is the coolest looking out of the 3.  He is also the fastest out them, that of course dodging bullet shots are much easier.

Now, Mercenaries is something like GTA:SA+True Crime.  Although you don't get the freedom you do as in GTA:SA, but you get to blow up much more stuff than in GTA:SA.  Sounds like a rip-off? Not really.  You will have to earn money to make a living in this game.  Because once the shop of menace is opened up, you will be sure to buy supplies, veichles, and air strikes from it.  You may think they only costs like around $1000 each.  But no, money is realistic in this game.  Meaning, most veichles cost more than 20 grand.  Not something cheapskate like $500.

Almost every building can be blown up.  There are 4 different countries which you can accept contracts from.  So its something like GTA2's play style.  One of the bad apple of Mercenaries is its loading time.  Its extremely long on the PS2(not sure of the Xbox version), but fortunately it loads seldomly.  Its up and downs on the gameplay, but overall its great.

Graphics:
Character models are designed pretty well.  Although its no MGS3 stuff, but its considered good on todays average.  Backgrounds are designed pretty well as well, especially the explosions.  They are extremely well done, as they look like real explosions.  Mercenaries runs on an average of 30 fps on the PS2 so there will be a little bit of slowdown in intense gun fights.

Sound:
The voice acting is good.  Each country speaks different language.  I'm chinese so I understand what those chinese people says in the game, and I actually found out they were playing a ploy on me.  Of course its the part of the mission so I can't really avoid it.  So knowing different language in the game is a great thing.  The explosions, and gun shots sounds realistic.  Overall, the sound is great.

BuY iT oR rEnT It?
This game can be long depending how you play it.  It can get boring as well because one you finish a mission you proceed to the next one.  Capturing the deck of 52 cards and all, its something like a sidequest.  Theres up and downs in this game, but of course it exceeded my expectations for it.  In my oppinion, this game should be a great collection to your PS2 liabrary..
