When I first got a hold of this game a really long time ago I was impressed. After playing it constantly for 4 or 5 years this game ranks up there in the top of the list od most addictive games ever! Basically what's going on her is you start out as a group of settlers back in 5000 BC and your goal is to become the most powerful civilization by the year 2020 AD.
Gameplay - The most amzing thing about this game is how many different ways you can become the best civilization. You can control the most land, make a lot of allies, build a lot of prosperous cities and straight out become the biggest and most liked civilization. You can also build up your military and go to war against your opposing civs. Destroy them and be the only civilization left. You can also go the route of technology and build a space ship that will take you to Alpha Centauri where you will build a new civilization and leave all others in the dust left over of earth. In anycase discovering new technologies come into use for all ways to go about conquering the world, mostly the spaceship one. You need to discover advancements for your city to grow, keep your citizens happy, build new kinds of weapons, and if you run out of things to research, there is always future technology with gives you a few extra points. Discovering new technologies isn't all you have to do, you must have your cities build the things that the technologies unlock and at the same time figure out how to make money, and keep your citizens happy.
Graphics - Not the most important part of the game, but when it came out they were as good as you were gonna get for any game like this.
Sound - Has all your weapon and building sounds you'd want, but once again this isn't very important to the game.
Replay Factor - I've been playing this game fore years and the fun never stops. This game has one of the highest replay factors of any game ever made.
Bonus - You have the ability to go into the file that have the presets for the game and change things around. You can change the preset of an entire civilization to whatever you want, this includes city names, male and female ruler names, civilization name, and so on. Also you can draw a few new units if you wanted to and have them added to the game. This added all kinds of new fun to the game when I discovered it.
