I couldn't wait to get my hands on this title when I first saw it was coming to the Xbox.  I was a big fan of the old NES titles and so my expectations were set pretty high.  The game didn't dissapoint, but didn't impress me much.
Gameplay - This is your basic hack 'n slash game with some leveling up, but the atmosphere of the game is what draws you in and keeps you there.  The basic point is to kill all of the bad guys coming at you and destroy their generators.  Along the way, you have to unlock doors, collect gems and some special items to help you move throughout the game.  As you go through you have a meter that fills up to 2 different levels.  What the meter does is allow you to use some power attacks.  These come in very handy during the game.  After you get through some levels that are basicly get just a journey to find some very important rune stones you get the a boss.  Kill the boss and you get a shard.  The shards help you to get to a special place later in the game.
Also in some of the levels, a little added bonus, are some doors that take you to areas where you have to collect all of the coins in a certain amount of time.  If you get them all you unlock a new character you can use.  It's always nice to have unlockables.
Graphics - The graphics while not spectacular aren't that dissapointing.  Everything looks neat and smooth.
Sound - The only thing that matters here is as long as it has the voice from the originals.  Well it does!  Also the music is pretty good.  It matches the theme of each level to a tee and gets you enthralled in the game.
Replay Factor - While not a whole lot in this area there is the multiplayer feature.  The multiplayer feature was what made the first ones so much fun and it does the same here.  It may not keep you playing this game instead of another, but if you and some friends were into the earlier versions you will play this over and over.

Gameplay - 7.5
Graphics - 7.0
Sound - 9.5
Replay Factor - 8.5
Overall - 8.2
