Having never played the original Deus Ex I readied myself for a completely new experience. Everything I've heard about the game was good so here I was playing through a pretty decent game.
Gameplay - To start of with you are Alex D, a biomodified person in the future. You are in Chicago when a terrorist attack happens and you barely escape the destruction. You end up in Seattle where another terrorist attack is happening and this time it sets you on a mission of discovery.
This game is a first person shooter that is also mainly a RPG. You get the normal selection of weapons. Numerous kinds of grenades, machine gun, rocket launcher, pistol, swords, and knives. The real uniqueness to the game comes in the implementation of biomods. You have different abilities such as invisibility, bot dominance, regeneration, and hacking skills. To be able to use the skills you have to set biomod canisters in the abilities you want. There are regular and black market canisters. The black market canisters can only be used on black market biomods and the normal ones can only be used on normal biomods. These will be used a lot and will really come in handy during difficult spots of the game.
You will be getting missions from many different people throughout the game with different and conflicting goals. Opposing organizations will be trying to get you to do missions that are the direct opposite of other organizations. This is where you get to choose with way to play the game. No way is the wrong way and no way is necessarily the right way.
Graphics - There are some really impressive things graphics wise and some pretty disappointing things. Starting off with the impressive stuff. The lighting is amazing. It's not Splinter cell quality lighting, but what really is, however, it is just about the next best you will see. Weapon actions look pretty good, and the textures for the most part are fine. I saw no real problem with the frame rates so, we're all set there.
Now on to some of the complaints here. The people don't look nearly as good as they should. Movement is pretty fluid and the physics look great, but facial expressions and some of the more important things that you will see if you play it are very disappointing. The game is pretty dark, which leads to showing off some of the lighting, but the graphics can't really be shown off much when there is little to see.
Sound - Voice acting is a little stale, but up to par. You won't feel like you are missing something that other games have. Weapon fire and other environmental sounds are very well done. Footsteps, thrown boxes, and such are all more than adequate.
Replay Factor - There is no online play and real lasting appeal. The good thing is that the game is rather short. I like short games sometimes for replay reasons. A lot of times you won't get as much play out of a longer game that may be better than you will out of a shorter game that may be worse. With this game you will want to play the game again knowing you won't be getting yourself into something you may get tired of and not finish again so the overall replay turns out to be pretty good.
Bonus - All of the different choices you have in the game lead to all kinds of fun and upredictability. You will go through the game thinking one thing and then it may change three or four times depending on the scripted events and your actions.
