For many, it was the first RPG they ever played, and the stepping stone into the RPG genre. Undoubtedly, Final Fantasy 7 is one the greatest, if not the greatest, RPGs of all time.
You play the game as Cloud, an ex-operative of an ultra-elite figting unit of a corporate tyrant called Shin-Ra, Inc. Cloud has now joined a group of rag-tag rebels, calling themselves AVALANCHE, that plan to take down ShinRa. But the story takes a sharp turn from that initial plot. Cloud and company end up exploring the planet, visiting many different locations to discover the secrets of the planet, and to learn about a greater enemy than ShinRa.
The graphics, considering the release date, are great (and comparing them to today's games is unfair). The gameplay is the best of any RPG I've ever played. The battles run smoothly, and customizable options allow for your preferences to take precedence over presets. The music is also superb, unmatched by any other game I've played.
The game lasts a long time, which is sometimes frowned upon, though in my opinion the longer, the better (provided it's actually entertaining, and it is). There are a large number of side-quests, and lucky for us Americans, we got the ultimate side-quest: the insertion of two incredibly powerful optional bosses.
All in all, the game could take you from 20 hours to 80 hours, and if you're a true RPG fan, you'll enjoy every minute of it. If you're amongst the few that haven't already played this game (or played it twice.. three times.. etc.), do yourself a favor and check it out. You won't regret it.
