Harvest Moon 64 is one of the most enjoyable games there are. The frightening irony is that, the concept of it just sounds plain dull. "Farming... Sounds like a blast...” And it is.

You play as a young character who has come to take over his deceased grandfather's farm in a small town called Rose Bud Village.

While on the farm, can choose to raise animals and grow crops.

The animals on your farm can include:

A horse -- Obtained from a rival farm in the village. With a horse you can participate in the Horse Races ever year. You can also ride horses around freely (excluded to the area around your farm, sadly), and you can give them items that are going to be sold (nope, they don't eat 'me).

A dog -- You start out with a dog on the farm. Dogs are probably the most useless of all animals game-wise, though he was always my favorite (he's a he, yeah, you'll see when he uses the bathroom in game in your house and on your rug!). Dogs are also involved in their own races annually.

Cows -- Probably the most useful of all animals on the farm. You can make money off their milk, and you can enter a cow into the Cow Festival every year. Using an item, a cow can become pregnant and have a baby cow after a set period of time.

Sheep -- In the barn with the cows, you can have sheep. You make money by selling their wool. You can have a total of 8 sheep and cow’s total.

Chickens -- Chickens are housed on their own next door to the cows/sheep. You can make money by selling their eggs, or you can put an egg in the incubator and hatch a chick. You can have chickens at a time.

Next, there are the crops you can plant. What's available depends on the time of year, and whether or not you have a greenhouse (an add-on you can purchase, more on that below). Some fruits/vegetables sell for more than others and it usually depends on the time it takes to grow them. Some plants can be harvested multiple times without need for replanting.

The house you start out with is rather plain. It's only a room with a table, a TV, and a bed. But after you've amassed a lot of gold and wood, you can buy a stairway (to the roof), a bathroom, kitchen, a deck, a green house, and a child's bed. There are also accessories you can win in contests and buy for your house.

The most important element of Harvest Moon 64 is the interaction with the townsfolk. It's very beneficial to have as many friends as possible, especially when you start thinking about marriage. There are five girls in town who you can marry, but you'll have to make them very happy before they'll agree to that.

Overall, it's a fun game that you can get used to quickly. I highly recommend it. And don't let the theme fool you. As with most people who've played and enjoy this game, I thought it was gonna' suck, but it doesn't. Trust me, it doesn't.
