I read the reviews and ads of Deus Ex eagerly, seeing numerous things which looked good to me. Talk of conspiracies, role-playing elements, an excellent, twisty story and more convinced me that I needed to have this game.
I waited until The Game of The Year version came out, and by then it was both cheap enough and certified enough to be bought by my standards. After loading the game up, I have to say that I wasn't as enthusiastic as I'd first been.
For one thing, the highly touted ability to do things in numerous ways was less implemented than originally said. For instance, in the first mission a total lack of ammunition and weaponry means you really can't go in guns blazing. You're forced to use stealth. This problem recurs frequently as some options are totally left out. For instance, hacking, which I spent a good deal of my XP on, is completely useless in the game. It's relatively easy to get passwords, and rarely did I ever have a need to crack a system.
The plot is good, but the voice acting is terrible. Flat and emotionless for every character, and the worst is your own. I like the soundtrack quite a lot however.
The graphics are fairly dismal, as many of the environments are drab and not detailed in the least. The characters are fairly well articulated and animated, and the environments are highly interactive.
Worst, perhaps, is when the game gets tricky with you. It tells you to leave when you need to stay, and pushes you around quite a bit more than it should. There are also a few bugs, like how I can access certain email addresses from certain computers, yet not see the same addresses even if I crack another computer that's supposedly on the same network.
All in all, there's a nice sci-fi premise and plot, and an interesting role playing element, but there's a bit missing from the total picture. Don't be fooled by the reviews.
