Super Metroid is a foundation in many senses. It provided a checkpoint through which gaming could pause for just a moment to see how far it had come. So polished a game had rarely been see up to that point. 1994 was a tumultuous time in gaming history. Nintendo's early days of domination where all but gone, though a firm marketshare still resided in its place. Sega had proven that they could hang and bang with the big boys and Sony was about to release a monster of a system, whose domination can only be rivaled by that of the NES. Super Metroid has given the community the foundation for such amazing games as Castlevania:SOTN and Metroid Prime. They showed us what it was like to want to complete a game in as little time as possible and rewarding the speedy ones. Super Metroid debuted boss battles the likes of which had never been seen. This along with scores that took your emotions from suspense to sadness and back to glory in the end. They tought us what its like to strengthen yourself over time in order to take on the mother brain. But in all of this new innovation, they always give the nod to the predecessor and a wink to the fans that have been witness to the metamorphosis over the years. Cheers Nintendo, hats off to you.
