I was first doubtful when my friend mentioned this game to me. Being a StarCraft fan, I was pretty narrow minded to try other PC games other than a Blizzard game. But I got curious so I bought it and I did not regret it.
StarCraft is still the best sci-fi RTS out there but Homeworld is a different breed. Starcraft is a 2D flat RTS but Homeworld is a full 3D space RTS so comparisons is nearly impossible. So I'll stop comparing them now.
First impressions lasts and Homeworld does not fail in this category. It has beautiful detailed graphics engine that is so powerful that you can zoom in on individual space vehicles and then zoom out to see the overall scenery.
Game is in full 3D. What I mean is that the units you control can go not just from the X and Y axis but also the Z axis. They can move in full 3D. So obstacles in the game does not exist. Units can go around an asteroid belt or stay behind a dust belt because they have don't have the restrictions of gravity.
The story in the game is pretty linear. What ever race you choose, the story is practically same but the real heroes are the Higarans. Things would have been better if they showed the story in on the perspective of the enemy race, which is one of the weaknesses of the narrative of the game. It is mission based and the units you produce is carried over to the next mission. Can make it frustrating sometimes to replay a bunch of missions just to have a mission that has minimal losses. But this forces the players to think and not just create a bunch of unites and rush the enemy.
The interface is kinda cumbersome and issueing z-axis directional orders can be difficult and keeping track of the small fighters in a battle can be strange since they move fairly fast. It is good that you can double click a unit and automatically select all of them that are in the screen much like in other RTS.
Its an amazing game that takes the RTS genre to the full 3D world or galaxy or universe. It has its problems but these are just minor and personal that on ecan get used to.
